Bellu Cemetery is Bucharest's hidden gem. The oldest cemetery in the city - mid 19th century, Bellu is considered the national pantheon of Romania. Politicians, artists, scientists, noblemen and members of the bourgeoisie, they are all buried here.
There are almost 300 monuments in the cemetery that make an exquisite collection of funerary art :monumental mausolea, life like statues and refined sculptures. They tell stories of family drama, medical discoveries, artistic and athletic greatness and tragic love stories. All of these gave the gave Bellu the nickname of 'Garden of Souls'.
Due to its history, personalities and collection of funerary art, Bellu Cemetery was included on the list of significant cemeteries for European history by the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe. A visit to Bellu Cemetery in its entirety is a cultural experience that should not be missed while in Bucharest.
